Initial Basic Training (IBT) for Motorcyclists in Kildare and Leinster

Initial Basic Training (IBT) is a mandatory program for all new first-time motorcycle learner permit holders and those upgrading between motorcycle categories. IBT must be completed with an Approved IBT Instructor (ADI) before you are legally allowed to ride on public roads.

Important: Completing IBT is a Legal Requirement

It is illegal to ride a motorcycle on public roads without completing your IBT and carrying both your IBT certificate and learner permit at all times. Upon successful completion of the training, you will be issued an IBT certificate, which must be kept with your learner permit as proof of compliance.

Additionally, you must complete the IBT program before riding unsupervised as a learner rider. The program ensures you acquire the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence to ride safely on public roads.

IBT Training Structure

The IBT program consists of 3 or 4 modules, depending on the motorcycle category you are training for. Each module is designed to cover specific aspects of motorcycle operation, road safety, and rider competency.

IBT Modules Breakdown:

  • For AM and A1 Categories (Moped and Small Motorcycles):
    • Modules 1, 2, 3, and 4 are required.
  • For A2 and A Categories (Medium and Large Motorcycles):
    • Modules 1, 3, and 5 are required.

As you progress through the IBT modules, your instructor will sign off on your achievements in a learner logbook. This logbook serves as evidence of your completed training.

IBT Logbook

This is an important document and your instructor will fill sign this as every module is completed. You will get one of these when you start IBT.

Module 1

Module 1 is a classroom based module and has 6 objectives.

Module 2

Module 2 is done in the training area and has 10 objectives.

Module 3

Module 3 is a classroom based module and has 9 objectives.

Module 4

Module 4 is a road based module and has 8 objectives.

Module 5

Module 5 is a practical module and is done between the training area and the road.

Certificate of Satisfactory Completion

This is the certificate you recieve when you succesfully complete IBT. This is an important document and will be needed when you are getting insurance.
